Chinese Herbal Medicine 中药

A prescription written for you after the consultation, and rewritten as things change.

What it is

A prescription of several herbs combined for you, written after the consultation. It is not one remedy for one complaint: the combination is chosen for the pattern the physician has read, and two people with the same complaint commonly leave with different prescriptions.

It is rewritten at follow-up visits. What you report back about the days in between is most of what the physician adjusts on.

What form it comes in

Powders to dissolve, syrups, tablets or capsules. The physician will discuss which suits you — this is a practical decision, and if a form is difficult to take it is worth saying so rather than persevering.

Some preparations taste strongly bitter. That is normal and not a sign anything is wrong.

Before your first prescription

Bring a list of everything else you take — prescription medication, supplements, vitamins, and anything from another practitioner. This is the single most important thing to mention. Herbs and medication can interact, and the physician can only account for what she has been told about.

Tell her if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, and mention any allergy — including to foods, since some herbs are foods.

While you are taking it

Follow the timing you are given — before or after food matters, and it differs by prescription. Stop and contact the clinic if anything unexpected happens: a rash, stomach upset, or anything that feels wrong.
